Choose a course and a school
Most foreign students who wish to study in France have already
defined a personal project : most of them are candidates for post-graduate
studies and come to improve and complete their training. Even in
that case, it is useful to keep in mind the other trainings likely
to offer better opportunities on the job market in your country.
Your choice must be based on strong motivations. But you should
both show realism and curiosity. Do not hesitate to seek the opinion
of relatives, professors or acquaintances which, with their experience,
can help you in your orientation. Once your subject area is decided
upon, you will have to choose the type of establishments which interest
you and which will accept your registration. You can opt for the
state education or the private education, a university or a school,
short vocational studies or general longer studies…
If you choose a private establishment, be sure it works according
to the legal and statutory measures imposed by the Ministry of Education.
It is an necessary condition to obtain the visa then the student
residence permit.
Contacts :
for more information about the establishment you plan to register,
you can contact :
EduFrance, 173, boulevard Saint-Germain, 75006 Paris.
Internet : .
Mail:
Centre national de documentation sur l'enseignement privé (CNDEP),
20, rue Fabert, 75007 Paris. Tel. : 01 47 05 32 68. Internet : .
Uncertain, you can ask the establishment for an official certificate
and its number of approval or inquire with the services of the Education
Offices or the prefecture.
You should also think of the geographic situation of your establishment
(Paris or the provinces, city center or suburbs) ; it is a decisive
factor which will influence your living conditions, in terms of
studies as well as residence (see the chapter on housing).

Some good questions to ask to yourself
Define clearly your strategy, that is, a well-balanced
assessment of your personality, your tastes and your ambitions,
your capacities and your skills, your experience and your vocational
wishes in taking account of economic perspectives.
Some questions must come to your mind :
Have I really chosen my course without received ideas ? Without
being excessively influenced by my parents or relatives ?
What are my capacities of investment in terms of motivation,
time and money ?
Am I aware of the effort of adaptation and the capacity of autonomy
necessary to follow studies abroad, far from my family and from
my friends ?
Have I chosen a subject that corresponds to my previous experience
and my working capacity ? Is my profile right for the studies
chosen and do I have the indispensable bases for the studies
I plan ? Have I considered all the directions possible for the
same job ? Did I take enough time to ask my relatives about
their trips or studies in France ?
Do I have enough information about the profession I plan to
study for ?
Do I have enough information about the prospects of the studies
I plan? Will I have the possibility to change my mind during
my studies if the courses are not what I expected or if I want
to improve my opportunities of insertion ? If I do not pass
my exam, will I have other options open ?
