So that your dreams become reality, and before starting any procedure any step, a sound piece of advice: mature your studies project. This is an necessary step which can spare you many disappointments.

Foreign students' own criteria

Every year, at the expiration of residence permit, the foreign student must ask for a new one. Since the beginning of the 90s, after the French Council of State's decisions unfavourable to foreign students, more power to control " the reality and the seriousness of the studies followed by foreign students " has been given to the Prefecture authorities.

We shall detail all the aspects concerning the administrative formalities of entrance and stay in France, in the second part of this guide.


Who are you ? Some figures

159 000 foreign students in higher education establishments in 1999-2000 in metropolitan France, 128 722 in a university, that is 9,2 % of all students in France (13,5 % in 85/86 and only 8,5 % in 97/98) :

62 637 of them are from Africa (49 %) - North Africa included (28 %) (they were respectively 58 % and 28 % in 85/86) ;

39 065 of them come from the EU and Eastern Europe (30 %) (They were 19 % in 85/86) ;

17 382 of them come from Asia ;

9 328 of them come from North and South America ;

191 of them come from Oceania.

51 % of them all are girls (they were only 34 % in 85/86)

The twelve nationalities the most widely represented in the French universities are : Morocco (17 675), Algeria (12 225), Tunisia (5 610), Germany (5 354), Senegal (4 039), Italy (3 798), Spain (3 561), Cameroun (3 210), the United Kingdom (3 111), Greece (2 526), Lebanon (2 484) and the United States (2 368).
