a financial plan for your studies in France

How much will it cost ?

Money is the sinews of war ; you should better not improvise. Before coming to France, you should consider precisely how you will finance your travel and your studies (family support, family housing, grants, allowance…).

Sure ; lay and free education is the duty of the State and in the preamble to the French Constitution. But even at the university or in state schools, you must pay fees (about 110 euros in 1st and 2nd cycles, and 225 euros for a doctorate. And other expenses must be added according to the university. The public and private schools are much more expensive and the fees can amount to thousands of euros !

Allow some extras money for housing, eating, buying books, transports, leisure, health… ; If you are to have a job, you will have first to obtain a job permit without which you will not be allowed to work in France (except for people coming from certain countries). We will deal with the question of the job, your rights and duties and will give you some advice in the third part of the guide.

To make a decent living in France, EduFrance agency considers an minimum budget of 600 euros per month in the provinces and 760 euros in Paris is necessary. It is a bit more than what you will have to justify as source of income to obtain a visa and a resident permit but less than what you need to live confortably. For instance, the minimum wage in France is about 1080 euros before taxes, which hardly permits people to make both ends meet. Nevertheless, with the student status, you will benefit from somes advantages such as the university restaurant (2,40 euros for a meal in 2001/2002), possibility to find a room in a student hall of residence and discounts for the young students (leisure, travels, transports…).
