University higher education
Some figures : The French universities accommodate more than
1 425 000 students whereas 700 000 other students follow other courses
(preparatory classes to grandes écoles, specialized schools, two-or-three-year
training…) Each year, 300 000 new graduates reach the university,
that is 70 % of pupils in secondary schools.
There are 84 universities in France in 28 school districts all over
the country, that is :
500 sites for university higher education (including IUT) ;
about 1000 research centers and university departments plus institutes
and schools proposing pluridisciplinary training with vocational
purpose.
Geographical disparities remain, even if they tend to disappear.
About half the French students register each year in seven school
districts. The three district around and in Paris (Paris, Créteil,
Versailles) gather 29 % of the French students. Each start of the
new academic year can be a small disaster for some new students
and a good deal of them cannot register where they would have liked
to.
There remain disparities between the universities too as the biggest
ones can accommodate up to 30 000 students (Paris I, V, VI ou VII
for example) whereas the smallest accommodate between 2000 and 5000.
Academic cycles and university diplomas : For long, the university
privileged general and theoretical training. But recently new courses
have appeared, available for different levels of students, more
open on the economic market, with a good balance between training
courses and practical courses. Between general training and vocational
training, you have the choice now.
The university training is organized in three complementary cycles
following one another. Most of the time, the studies are long (four
years or more), with, however, links and reorientation possibilities
after two or three years or studies.
Medicine, pharmacy or ondotology studies follow a specific development.
They are subject to a specific part at the end of the chapter.
