Before leaving France
Some weeks before the date of the departure, your heart squeezes
up at the idea of leaving France. Unmistakably a part of your life
was marked by the French society. Already, you make a first assessment
this experience. At the same time, the excitement grows at the perspective
of finding your soil, your family back. In the same way as you prepared
your coming to France, you should organize your return.
Please, do not neglect the following advice :
Announce your departure to your owner for the period you need (usually
three months) before leaving places, (look at your lease).
Pay all the invoices (EDF/GDF, France Telecom, etc.). To leave with
no debt, it is at the same moment to give a good image of you and
your country, but also of all the foreign students in France.
Close your bank account.
Organize the sale of your furniture, untransportable objects. For
that purpose, speak about it to people around you, put ads almost
everywhere. There are always foreign students, freshly arrived from
their country, who need furniture.
Look for a reliable person and please, give him (her) mandate to
remove or to receive your diploma. It will be generally impossible
for you to leave with your diploma in hand. Most of the time, indeed,
it is emitted six months (sometimes one year) after the exam. The
sending towards your country should on no account be made by normal
mail. Please, prefer the system of the diplomatic bag or take advantage
of the visit of a friend in your country. If you can gat back your
diploma in your country get back your diploma on the spot, that
is in France, you should have it guaranteed by the Foreign Ministry
and your own embassy.
Keep links with France. Subscribe to French newspapers and magazines.
Give your address to institutions, to associations, to bodies, and
ask that they keep you informed about your centres of interest,
academic or not.
Be careful of verifying and of enriching your address book. Once
in your country, it will be precious to you for keeping contacts.
Do not forget that you are a part of a generation which benefits
from the development of new technologies, think so of noting indeed
e-mails.
By knowing pertinently that the distance and the time are the worst
enemies to keep relationships, it is important to feed, to cultivate
this human "capital", the keystone of possible exchanges between
your country and France. Think of organizing a holiday or a dinner
to mark your departure.
