The Crous, a compulsory passage

What is the Crous ? Crous (regional centre of the university and student's welfare) is public establishments created just after WWII (in 1955), whose mission is to favour the improvement of the living and working conditions of the students. They try to estimate the needs and desires of the student population, by means of inquiries, etc.

Crous and their local contacts : (the Clous, local Centres of the university and students' welfare) have several services : reception and information, flats, restaurants, social services department, temporary employment, cultural activities, reception for foreign students, tourism. Each Crous is managed by an committee elected every other year, and chaired by the vice-chancellor of Academy.

How to benefit from the Crous services ? Every student registered in a superior educational establishment approved by the student Social Security has access to the services of Crous. Nevertheless certain helps target first and foremost the students with low income (grants, housing on university campus…).

The student's welfare networks

Specific services for student life

University catering

The Crous propose :
complete meals in the university canteens (2,33 euros in 2001/2002) ;
diversified formulae in breweries, cafeterias, etc. managed by Crous ;
medico-social meals.

Housing
The Crous, with a constant dialogue with the students, does its best find you place to live and to settle the various little problems linked to this matter.
It proposes :
rooms in residence or university halls ;
officially agreed studios ;
council housing estate (HLM) ;
rooms downtown ;
rooms in the International City of Paris ;
halls and residences not run by the Crous.

Social action
If you meet moral, psychological or material difficulties, a team of social workers is in every Crous and on most campuses, to listen to you, advise you and inform you. On the other hand, the Crous is the unique organisation to manage the university grants on social criteria. It can also, under certain conditions, bring helps such as loans on trust, legacies and different allowances.

The welcome of the foreign students
The Crous is in charge of the reception of the grant holders of the French government, as well as the grant holders of states having signed agreements with France.
If you are " BGF " (grant holders of the French government), the Crous :
welcomes you when arriving ;
finds you a place to live ;
manages your grant ;
makes some steps to help you obtain your residence permit ;
provides you a Social security cover ;
ensures the follow-up of your studies ;
organises cultural activities ;
publishes booklets in different languages ;
sets up with the French embassies abroad a program of follow-up - return of the former grant holders and trainees (logiciel ASTER. E-mail : cnoaster@paris7.jussieu.fr).

The European Union (EU)

The Cnous sets up programs of exchanges between the countries of the EU. To know more about it, you should apply to one of its contacts, regional or local.

Temporary employment
The Crous helps you find training periods or temporary jobs in various sectors : private courses, hotel business, baby sitting, au-pair, polls and surveys, etc.

Culture
Each Crous has a service of cultural activities, which takes care of the animation of the campus and the halls of residence (exhibitions, concerts, clubs of theater, photo, music…). You can also obtain Crous tickets at preferential prices for shows and cultural events.

Thanks to the program " Culture-Action ", you can receive a technical and financial help from the Crous to carry out a cultural project (for example, make discover your country to the French students or the other nationalities). In every Crous, a delegate in the cultural action is at your disposal.



"Do you know the International Orchestra of Paris?

This orchestra was created in 1967 on the initiative of Crous of Paris. It gathers about sixty students, for the greater part foreign, among which certain grant holders or former grant holders. About twenty nationalities are represented in it. The training occurs every year in prestigious sites (Grand Amphitheatre - lecture hall - of La Sorbonne, Unesco…) and tours in the regions of France. The Crous ensures then all the expenses of organization, thanks to subsidies from the Foreign Ministry. Soloists of international fame bring sometimes collaborate with the orchestra, which sometimes gives place to recordings.

Tourism
The OTU-Voyage travel agency of the Crous (present in all the university cities in France) proposes the students the discounts for all the destinations. It has its own catalog of Circuits and Stays.
