Manage your courses
As regards the management of your plan of studies, the best reflex
in case of failure, if you have the level and the possibility of
re-registering, it is to start again, rather than change prematurely
for a new way. before any change of orientation, be careful. Review
with your teachers and ask for help and advice from the services
of a guidance. Appeal to a centre of validation - there is one with
every university - to assess your orientation.
For the renewal of your residence permit, you must have an ascending
and coherent programme. There are many students who have had the
renewal of their residence permit refused because their change of
orientation was considered as unjustified by the prefecture : matters
changes (from mathematics to history, for example) or re-registration
at the same level or at a lower level (several successive registrations
in different Deug or registration in Degree after a successful master's
degree…).
To a reasonable extend, you have a certain right to make mistakes.
In the first year of Deug, the initial half of the year of orientation
allows you to discover ways close enough to allow you to define
your orientation if need be, even to re-orientate you towards a
short subject : in IUT, for example, there are special sections
ensuring a training in one year, reserved for students having followed
a higher education of two years (Deug…).
After a preparatory class, if you failed in the competitive exam
to a Grande Ecole, you can turn to a short subject (DUT or BTS)
or to join a general university field. The same thing in case of
failure in the competition of the end of first year in medicine
or odontology : you can then join one of the mentions of Deug in
Sciences…
Here are some examples, among others, of possible " links ". Links
are defined by universities and other establishments to allow certain
reorientations. For every level of studies there e are specific
links. But be careful, nothing is systematic. A good reason for
getting as much information as possible.
links are not moreover only useful when retaking courses. They also
allow to pursue studies : with one DUT you can, for example, join
a multi-subjects Degree or a 2nd professionalized cycle… The studies
of lawyer and magistrate are considered after a Master's degree.
This one can also open the door to engineer or business schools.
Indeed, most Grandes Ecoles have their own parallel admission systems
: practically all admits (on title and file, sometimes on competitive
exams) students in first, second and even third year for those having
a programme of five years. In the first year, the admission is made
mostly on competition for the holders of a diploma bac + 2 (Deug,
BTS, DUT). The parallel admission in second or third year targets
the holders of a Degree or master's degree (or of foreign diplomas
of this level) and is made on file and interview. According to the
prestige of the school and its degree of selection, the system can
be more or less interesting.
At all levels, you will have to build with perspicacity your plan
of studies : highways, side streets, forks, you will choose the
good way and anticipate by considering extra solutions. Certain
studies allow to change easily ; the others should be led up to
the end. Against the risky orientations and the failures, a single
solution : information.
