Teaching places
Several structures give you the possibility to follow classes of
French language and civilization.
Universities : Most
universities are endowed with a training center of French. After
a assessment test you will attend the classes or the seminars corresponding
to your level (see examples in the following table). Follow classes
at the university has three advantages :
1. Quality-price ratio.
2. You are already inside the university ; your registration will
be easier.
3. Your diploma is validated by the university, so it is worthy.
The French Alliance
: A serious and considered organization, this structure targets
especially the foreign students who want to improve their French,
without following studies after. This organization has the advantage
to offer the students different possibilities open up to the French
society. Indeed, all year round, it proposes journeys, theater,
sports, etc. The French Alliance provides you with job and lodging
ads. The registration is a little more expensive than for the university.
See French Alliances' addresses in our Address book.
The catholic Institute
: Same remarks as for the French Alliance. However, you should know
that the Institute is of religious character and that pilgrimages
are organized for the Christian students. See Catholic Institutes'
addresses in our Address book.
Schools of language
: These private schools are numerous and consequently the prices
practised vary a lot. Do not rush, play the competition, inquire
about the quality of the courses : number of students by class,
teaching equipment (labs, etc.). Ask the former students. Try for
one month first.
The Crous spreads free of charge the booklet of the Foreign Ministry
French foreign language lessons and pedagogy training courses of
French foreign language in France. It draws the list of the permanent
courses in language and French civilization for the foreign students.
The information contained in this booklet is available on the Internet
on the site " France " of the Foreign Ministry, at the following
address : www.france.diplomatie.fr ; column : " French language
and French-speaking world ".
The Evaluation Test of French (TEF) was worked out by the chamber
of commerce and industry of Paris (CCIP) to assess the level in
French language of the persons the French language of which is not
French. It estimates the capacity of understanding and expressing
in French, gives a quantitative and qualitative appreciation of
the linguistic level of the candidates and gets an detailed and
individualized analysis of the results. Adopted by numerous schools
or companies to test the level of their candidates, the TEF is becoming
a reference exam.
To know more about it : consult
the site of the chamber of commerce and industry of Paris, dedicated

The TCF, Test of French Language
A new tool of assessment of the knowledge in
French for the foreign students has just been set up. Lighter
than the DELF and the DALF, the TCF (test of French language)
is approved by the Ministry of Education. The tests take place
in 150 centres approved worldwide (centres already authorized
to stage the DELF and the DALF).
To know more about it you can consult the Web site of the international
Centre of educational studies (CIEP) : www.ciep.fr/language/tcf/tcf.htm
The CIEP has contributed since its creation in 1945 to the development
of the international cooperation in education. It allows hundreds
of thousands of teachers and persons responsible for the educational
systems to meet, to exchange, to confront and to share their
experience. The CIEP acts in three domains today :
o education cooperation ;
o international teaching ;
o the French language (training and teachers in French foreign
language, development of information technologies in this sector,
certifications and diplomas of French language for foreigners
: DELF-DALF, test of knowledge of French - TCF-, etc.).

Advice from a teacher
Antoinette Revier, teacher in French.
" I used to give course of French abroad before entering
a School of French language in Paris. My key word is "communication".
In my class, a dozen nationalities of so are gathered around
a training of French. I apprehend this variety as an enrichment
and not as a major difficulty. With my experience, I shall give
essentially three pieces of advice to a foreign student eager
to improve his French :
I think the foreign student should immerse
himself in French . He should discuss in French with his foreign
classmates . I shall also advise him to listen to the radio,
watch TV, go to the museum, be attentive when walking in the
street, go to the public places, speak with people.
He should not confine to teachers and schoolbooks.
He should go beyond, be eager to practise the language as french
is a living language. That for, he should develop his own strategies,
for example, use the media library to solve phonetic problems.
He must above all be active and stop believing that everything
comes from the courses.
He should determine his needs. He should know
why he learns French. Indeed, the approach will be different
if he wants to acquire strong bases to carry out a 3rd cycle
diploma or if he takes classes with a view to travelling in
France. "
