Transports

Public transports : To move in the city or go to the university, you probably need, if you are not a champion of rollers or bicycle, the public transports. Practical and effective, they are also a nice means to discover a city and to investigate one of the multiple aspects of the French society. To know the various routes, get a map of the public transports network in a ticket office. Inquire also about the proposed formulae of sale : one ticket, weekly cards, monthly or annual cards according to your needs. Most university towns propose particularly attractive fixed prices to the students : Imagines 'R' card in Paris or Campus card in Lyons for instance. Finally, know that recently a policy has been implemented to improve the comfort (design, access to the handicapped persons, etc.) and the speed (bus lane, for example) public transports.

Private cars : The pleasures of the public transports are not your cup of tea. You prefer to possess your own vehicle to go through the city any time. OK, but is your driving licence really valid in France ? You can drive during all the duration of your studies with your national licence. However, you'd better know that in case of traffic check you will have to present simultaneously your student card and the driving licence of your country.

France offers you the possibility to obtain your French driving licence.
To have your licence validated, you should put deposit a request with the Prefecture (in Paris : prefecture of Police) for a period of one year from the date of allocation of the first residence permit. Go to the prefecture with the following documents (and the photocopies of every document) :
ID card and residence permit ;
your foreign licence accompanied with an official translation by a translator under oath (consult lists in city halls) ;
two photos of face, bare head, with your glasses, if you need some to drive ;
a documentary evidence of place of residence (receipt of rent, electricity…). If you are accommodated for free, you will present a certificate of residence accompanied with a documentary evidence of place of residence of the person which accommodates you.
